About Laura

Laura Baker is a psychiatric nurse practitioner, author, and survivor whose life and work have unfolded on both sides of the bed.

She was a nursing student when she was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy at twenty years old. During the next twenty years, she became a nurse, a nurse practitioner, a wife, and a mother of three while continuing to live with serious heart disease.

Her experiences as both provider and patient shape her writing about medical trauma, medical PTSD, patient-centered care, and the complicated work of building a life after survival.

Laura is the founder and owner of Henrietta Psychiatric NP Care, a multidisciplinary psychiatric practice in West Henrietta, NY.
